But Africa risks squandering this huge opportunity unless its leaders can address the continent’s unwelcome reputation as one of the world’s most conflict-prone regions. According to the World Bank, nine African countries currently suffer from high institutional and social fragility; 12 are engaged in medium or high-intensity conflicts. Unsurprisingly, the number of conflict-related deaths in the region has surged from 2,200 in 2010 to an average of 14,000 per year since 2014. Transnational terrorist networks have recently intensified the problem.
Besides causing untimely deaths and suffering, and destroying infrastructure, conflicts impede economic activity and undermine formal and informal cross-border trade. Informal trade between Mali and Algeria, for example, has fallen by more than 64% since 2011, largely owing to the conflict in northern Mali and the closure of the two countries’ border.
The COVID-19 pandemic has done a number on entertainment venues over the past year-plus.
âThe live entertainment industry was the first to shut down,â Mountain Health Arena Director Cindy Collins said. âAnd it will be the last to fully reopen. Being a multi-billion dollar business, it was very hard hit.â But Collins said the industry began immediately to make the necessary changes and adaptations, using the enforced down time to plan for when and how to reopen. Collins said those plans were made from a global perspective, with information gathered from multiple countries.
Mountain Health Arena is owned by ASM Global, a management company that covers five continents and 14 countries with more than 300 venues worldwide. It is now open and is the site of live shows again.

Answer: Volunteering is a great way to give back and support your community. Senior Servicesâ Meals-on-Wheels program is an excellent opportunity for volunteers to not only provide a nutritious meal, but also to form friendships, share warm smiles, and provide a safety check for older adults, many of whom are living alone and having trouble preparing meals during the day.
Just about one year ago, the Meals-on Wheels program, which prided itself on providing hot lunch-time meals to senior participants in the program each weekday, shifted its Meals-on-Wheels delivery process to delivering five frozen meals, once per week in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep participants and volunteers as safe as possible. As the number of COVID-19 cases decrease and the number of people vaccinated increase in our community, Senior Services plans to resume hot, daily meal delivery on Monday, May 3rd. That goal can only be reached with the support of community volunteers
